CogMed FAQs

How Does It Work?

Through a gamified experience, you will be faced with between 3 and 5 training exercises per session. The games are AI driven and you either progress or repeat based on your responses. Some games you may find easier and be required to hold larger chunks of information in your working memory, others may be harder so there are more repetitions of smaller strings to get your working memory working for you!

What Is The Benefit?

The studies consistently demonstrate both short- and long-term benefits for users regardless of age and condition. Click through to CogMed Research to learn more about studies that have demonstrated the amazing results from this program.

What Is The Time Commitment?

At Mind Stretch, we can work out a way to fit CogMed into your busy schedule. You can opt for between 3 to 5 sessions per week for between 25-35 minutes each session. We don’t recommend doing more than one session per day. In this way, it takes between 6 to 14 weeks, depending on the time you can allocate to it. There is no better or worse way; the more intense doesn’t necessarily generate a better outcome.

Consider this like a brain gym; consistency is key to build up your physical muscles, just like it is for mental muscles.

You receive six Coaching calls over your CogMed journey, spaced across your 6-14 week program. These are short calls and would usually occur on a regular day and time. Often these calls are more easily made just with an adult where the user is a child or teen, with feedback being passed on via the parent.

Will I Get Bored?

There are two different themes we can assign for you.

In Create theme you are faced with gems and coins for each exercise you complete. These can be converted into something similar to SimCity to build a CogMed island with buildings, roads, homes, nature, and interesting landmarks. CogMed island can only be unlocked once the day’s trainings are complete. Your CogMed completion certificate will include an image of your unique finished map.

In Focus theme your screen is as distraction free as possible, with only the day’s exercises visible. Once your training is done for the day, a little pop up tells you to come back tomorrow and you are done. For the extremely distracted CogMed users or adult users this is often better, with tangible motivators being negotiated prior to starting training (e.g., do all training blocks in weeks 1 and 2 and receive x).

If you find that boredom is an issue, we would coach you through some options for; is the environment impacting the mindset, or the time of day? What additional motivators can be added in to assist completion? We have found in our 15 years of working with CogMed users that boredom tends to only creep in when 100% focus has crept out. Usually working with a cheerleader to sit alongside assists in both focus and enjoyment of the CogMed experience.

What Age is CogMed Useful For?

We would typically not take anyone under 5. For these young students, often aged between 5 and 7 years old where letters and numbers are not yet concretely understood, we recommend CogMed Light. Light is a modified version that does not include any letters or numbers in the exercises.

For children 7+ and teens we recommend CogMed Standard – Create version, with the build in gems and coins so that there is an intrinsic reward built in for some free creation at the end of each training block.

For highly distracted teens and adults, we recommend CogMed Standard – Focus version, where the training is the only focus on the screen and the reward game at the end is not offered.

In the Standard version there are games that include both letters and numbers, so understanding of these is paramount.

What Are The Technology Requirements?

We recommend Chrome or Safari on either your Windows or Mac computer or tablet. You’re encouraged so save the login page to your home screen for easy access during your CogMed user experience. Over ear noise-cancelling headphones are also recommended, as is a splitter for younger users so a parent can also hear the audio attached

What Is The Financial Investment?

For a single licence, we offer the program for $1300 (RRP $1500+GST).

For a household licence with 2 users we offer a 10% discount.

For a household licence with 3+ users we offer a 15% discount.

For household licences, the coaching calls occur in the same call (i.e., six calls per household over the course of the CogMed user journeys, which covers all licences in every call). For this reason, household licences must all enrol at the same time to be eligible for the discount.

We charge lower than the RRP due to our large volume of orders and bulk licence purchasing. This way, it’s a win-win with you receiving the discount and expertise, and our brand growing ever stronger as a leading CogMed provider.

What Happens After CogMed?

In conjunction with your Coach, you’ll be recommended some options for next steps. Depending on why you’ve engaged with CogMed to begin with, you may be recommended one of Mind Stretch’s other programs. You may be recommended 40 extension trainings with CogMed, or you may opt to exit our service after successful completion of CogMed. Whatever the next step is, we can assist you.
